About
My name is Julie, and I am not a librarian. I only play one at work. Technically I am a “Subject Department Library Assistant”, but I do everything a “Librarian” does. I am half-way finished with a Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS) degree, and I have been working for a large urban public research library for almost 6 years now. I have worked in branches, and I have worked in subject departments and circulation - I’ve done it all.
I am also very active in the library community. I am involved in several professional membership organizations, and serve on various committees:
- American Library Association: I am a regular member, and member of the Library Support Staff Interests Round Table. I am currently up for nomination for Vice President/President Elect of the LSSIRT, so we’ll see how that pans out next month.
- Ohio Library Council: I am a member as well as the Assistant Coordinator of the Supportive Staff Division. Next year I am slated to take over as Coordinator. Committees I currently sit on include the 2008 Support Staff Conference Planning Committee, and the SSD Blog Committee.
- Northeast Ohio Regional Library System: I am on the Website Advisory Committee and the Technology Advisory Committee. (Please don’t blame me for their crappy site design though - I tried my best to talk some sense into them.)
- Greater Cleveland History Digital Library Consortium: I am a member, and am on the soon-to-be-formed Newspaper Digitization Committee.
- Cleveland Public Library: Formerly was a Trainer for the CPL Training Committee where I trained new employees on everything from our library software to databases, bibliographic and circulation procedures, online resources, and more.
Outside the library world, I am involved in a lot of online projects and ventures. I not only run a handful of my own websites, but I also do some web design and development work for other businesses and individuals.
I am also a writer. I write for a number of big online publications, including SearchEngineJournal, where I mainly focus on search engine and SEO (search engine optimization) news and commentary. I provide content for other publications under my name, as well as under pen names and as a ghost writer. You name it, I’ve probably written about it!
